Ticket Changes

In general, AVE, Long Distance, Avant and Conventional Mid-Distance train tickets can be exchanged. Cercanías and Feve services, however, do not admit changes.

The terms and conditions for changes are as follows:

If the ticket has an expiration date, the new requested travel date will be before that expiration date.

Tickets for AVE, Long Distance, Avant and Mid-Distance can be exchanged in general, except when they are linked to offers that expressly indicate otherwise, as many times as the customer wishes within their validity period (from acquisition until the time established for each sales channel) and sufficiently in advance to permit the corresponding procedures in the sales system.

Changes will be made with at least 10% on the ticket price for the exchange charge, unless there is some limit established in the sales conditions for the offers to which the ticket is subject, and even free of charge for changes on the same day. These charges can be consulted for each offer described in the “Fares and Discounts” section in this website, except for Conventional Mid-Distance services, which will be charged at least 1 euro per ticket.

Tickets for Cercanías and Feve services and validation for multi-trip tickets cannot be exchanged.

AVE, Long Distance, Avant and Mid-Distance admit no exchanges on multi-trip tickets and their validations.

The refund or generated pass will be processed using the same payment method previously used as indicated below:

  • For the same day, the ticket change will be free of charge (unless otherwise stated in the conditions of the original offer):
    • If the new ticket is MORE expensive, the customer will pay the difference.
    • If the new ticket is the same price, the customer will not be charged.
    • If the new ticket is LESS expensive, the refund after deducting the change fee, if any, will generally discount 15% from the amount of the difference to reimburse the customer.
  • For another day, the ticket change will include 10% for charges or the costs specified in the sales conditions of the contracted offers:
    • If the new ticket is MORE expensive, the customer will pay the difference. The customer will also pay an additional amount equivalent to the exchange charge percentage established in the offer for the exchanged ticket.
    • If the new ticket is identical in price, the customer will pay the additional amount equivalent to the exchange charge percentage established in the offer for the exchanged ticket as an exchange fee.
    • When the change is for a LESS expensive ticket, the refund after deducting the change fee, if any, will discount 15% from the amount of the difference to reimburse the customer.

Issuing a new ticket for AVE and Long Distance services will not generate management charges.

Ticket cancellations

Tickets for AVE, Long Distance, Avant and Conventional Mid-Distance can be cancelled in general within their validity period (from acquisition until the time established for each sales channel) and sufficiently in advance to permit the corresponding procedures in the sales system.

In general, cancellations will be processed with at least 15% of charges on the ticket price (excluding management charges). Additionally, certain sales offers may have more restrictive conditions, for instance, not admitting cancellation or only within a certain period in advance and with a different percentage for fees.

Cercanías and Feve admit ticket cancellation only on purchase. This transaction is free for customers.

Multiviaje multi-trip ticket cancellation

Cancellations can be made for AVE, Long Distance, Avant and Conventional Mid-Distanceat no associated cost so long as no transaction has been made on it. If the multi-trip pass has been used for a transaction but no journey has been made on it, it can be cancelled with payment of a cancellation fee of 15%.

For Cercanías and Feve they can only be cancelled before the start of the usage period. This transaction is free for customers.

Multiviaje multi-trip ticket validation cancellation

AVE, Long Distance and Avant admit cancellation of the validation at no additional charge for the customer.

Conventional Mid-Distance admits booking validation cancellation at no cost for the customer. However, if customers have validated on a train with a higher fare, they may cancel at no cost if they do so within two hours after validation. After this, they will need to pay 15% of the difference between the two fares as an admin fee.

They can no longer be cancelled after validating through the turnstile for Cercanías and Feve .

The refund or generated pass will be processed using the same payment method previously used.

Tickets purchased at station ticket offices can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    This must be done with the same payment method used previously.

  • Telephone sales and telephone-based change and cancellation service.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 30 minutes.

    The transactions can only be made for tickets purchased with a credit card or Renfe loyalty programme card.

    Tickets paid for in cash can only be exchanged if the new ones have the same price but cannot be cancelled.

  • Self-service Multiproduct Machines

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    The transactions can only be made for tickets purchased with a credit card or Renfe loyalty programme card.

Tickets purchased at In-person Travel Agencies can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

    For cancelling tickets paid for in cash and acquired at a Travel Agency, the ticketholder must go to the station ticket offices to get a voucher that should then be given to the Travel Agency to get a refund within days.

  • In-person Travel Agencies.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

    Touroperación RIT tickets may not be changed. Cancellations will always be made at the travel agency were they were purchased.

  • Self-service Multiproduct Machines

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Previously printed ticket.

    The transactions can only be made for tickets purchased with a credit card or Renfe loyalty programme card.

Tickets purchased at www.renfe.com can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

    If the exchange of a ticket acquired via Paypal entails a payment, the full amount of the tickets will be refunded to the Paypal account, and then the amount for the new tickets will be charged in the customer's selected payment method.

  • www.renfe.com.

    The ticket locator or number is necessary for these operations.

  • Telephone sales and telephone-based change and cancellation service.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 30 minutes.

    The transactions can only be made with a credit card, for a ticket with an identical price or with a Renfe loyalty programme card.

  • Self-service Multiproduct Machines

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Previously printed ticket.

    The transactions can only be made for tickets purchased with a credit card or Renfe loyalty programme card.

    Tickets acquired with Paypal only admit changes at zero cost.

  • Renfe Ticket

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 15 minutes.

    After associating the ticket to Renfe Ticket only the ticket locator or number is necessary.

    Tickets acquired with Paypal only admit changes at zero cost.

Tickets purchased by Telephone Sales can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

  • Telephone sales and telephone-based change and cancellation service.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 30 minutes.

    If the telephone reservation ticket has not been issued.

    The transactions can only be made with a credit card, for a ticket with an identical price or with a Renfe loyalty programme card.

  • Self-service Multiproduct Machines

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    If the telephone reservation ticket has not been issued.

    The transactions can only be made for tickets purchased with a credit card or Renfe loyalty programme card.

Tickets purchased through Online Travel Agencies can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Transactions are only admitted for tickets acquired through Online Travel Agencies with the Business Fare. With the same payment method as that used previously. Changes and cancellations can only be made for tickets purchased with a credit card.

    AGE Fare tickets admit neither change nor cancellation.

  • In-person Travel Agencies.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    When admitted by the fare applied to the ticket, changes and cancellations may be made only through the Travel Agencies in the corresponding sales network.

  • Online Travel Agencies.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel: 5 minutes.

    When admitted by the fare applied to the ticket, cancellations may be made only through the issuing Online Travel Agencies.

Tickets purchased at Self-service Multiproduct Machine can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

  • Telephone sales and telephone-based change and cancellation service.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 30 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

  • Self-service Multiproduct Machines

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously.

  • Renfe Ticket.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 15 minutes.

    Once the locator or ticket number is associated with a Renfe Ticket, changes and cancellations are admitted with the same payment method previously used.

Tickets purchased with Renfe Ticket can be exchanged/cancelled at:

  • Station ticket offices and the Ceuta Sales Office.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 5 minutes.

    Same payment method used previously. The ticket must be printed.

  • www.renfe.com.

    Time before the train's scheduled departure from the passenger's departure station to cancel or make changes: 15 minutes.
