S-446 electric rail car

This series arose in the 1980s as a result of the testing on a new type of rolling stock, in view of the needs caused by the strong increase in the demand for transport in major Spanish cities. Initially, the 445.001 prototype was developed, built by national manufacturers with support from the Centre for Technological and Industrial Development (CDTI). This initiative was modified to build the 446 series, which has a different configuration (M-R-M) than that of the previous series, including power that exceeds 2000 kW, acceleration of more than 1 m/s2, an interior layout that allows transporting a total of 700 seated and standing passengers, better accessibility and new features for customers. In 2005, a process for modernising and expanding the service life of this series began.
