DEPARTURE DATES 2018
Reception aboard between 13:00 and 13:30 h at La Concordia Station in Bilbao (Calle Bailén, 2), a unique modernist building dating back to 1902, one of the most genuine of Bilbao’s Belle Époque. Rendezvous with the crew and accommodation on board. A cold lunch will be served while El Expreso de la Robla heads for Balmaseda, the capital of Las Encartaciones region. There we will visit the Museum of Berets La Encartada, which will bring us back to the times of the Industrial Revolution. After a tour of the town, we will go back to the train which will climb up along the steeply railway slope which leads to the Merindades of Burgos. Our destination is the beautiful village of Espinosa de los Monteros, where we will have dinner and will spend the night.
After enjoying our first breakfast on board we will start our day visiting the Ojo Guareña karstic complex, consisting of more than 100 Kilometres of galleries and listed as a Natural Monument. Then we will visit the Alcázar de los Condestables and the town of Medina de Pomar. After lunch we will get back to Espinosa de los Monteros, where El Expreso de la Robla is waiting to take us comfortably to Mataporquera. Then, by bus we will get to Aguilar de Campoo and the magnificent landscapes of Palencia’s mountains. Before enjoying a dinner we will visit this village, declared a Historic-Artistic site which holds an exciting heritage and a beautiful monuments collection. Return back to Mataporquera where we will spend the night.
After having breakfast aboard, we will travel by bus to Carrión de los Condes, a village to visit and admire its rich Romanesque heritage. Free time and then bus trip to Frómista, a well-known willage by its breathtaking Romanesque church of Saint Martin and the locks system of the Castile Channel. Lunch and return back to Mataporquera where the train is waiting to take us to the railway village of Cistierna, already in the province of León. Dinner and overnight.
We will take our last breakfast on board while the train takes us to Matallana. From here, by bus, we will approach the Cave of Valporquero, famous by its stalactites, stalagmites and fanciful shape flowstones, as well as its breathtaking Great Rotunda, a 100,000 m3 underground cavity. Then return to Matallana and train trip to San Feliz station. Farewell of the crew and bus trip to León City Centre, where our trip will be over at around 14:00 h.
