La Robla Route: León-Bilbao (4 days/3 nights)

Day 1, saturday.

León-Cistierna

Reception at the “Ancho Métrico” (narrow gauge) Station in León (Ave. Padre Isla, 48) from 12:30 to 13:00 h. Our bus will take us to San Feliz Station where El Expreso de la Robla is waiting. Crew’s meeting and cccommodation, cold lunch and train trip to Matallana where the bus will take us to The Cave of Valporquero, well-known by its stalactites, stalagmites and fanciful shape flowstones, as well as its breathtaking Great Rotunda, a 100,000 m3 underground cavity. Bus transfer back to the train and trip on board to the railway village of Cistierna. Dinner and night.


Day 2, sunday

Cistierna-Mataporquera

First Breakfast on board while approaching Guardo (Palencia province). From there we will travel by bus to the municipality of Saldaña to visit La Olmeda Roman Villa and its magnificent mosaics collection. Return to Guardo and lunch, heading next for Mataporquera. Then bus trip to Aguilar de Campoo, a village declared a Historic-Artistic site which holds an exciting heritage and a beautiful monuments collection. City tour, dinner and bus trip back to Mataporquera where we will spend the night.


Day 3, monday

Mataporquera – Espinosa de los Monteros.

Breakfast on board the train in our way to Espinosa de los Monteros, while skirting the Ebro’s Reservoir. From Espinosa, our bus will take us to the Ojo Guareña karstic complex, consisting of more than 100 Kilometres of galleries which has been listed as a Natural Monument. Then we will visit Medina de Pomar where the Alcázar de los Condestables is located. Lunch and return to the train waiting in Espinosa de los Monteros. After a relaxing time, we will visit this beautiful village in the Merindades of Burgos, where we will dinner and will spend the night.


Day 4, tuesday

Espinosa de los Monteros-Bilbao

Our breakfast will be liven up with the magnificent landscapes of the Mena Valley, going over it while we descend by the steeply railway slope down to Balmaseda (the capital city of Las Encartaciones region), in the Basque Country. Once in Balmaseda we will visit the Museum of Berets La Encartada, bringing us back to the times of the Industrial Revolution. Next we will make a city tour before going back to the train to start our last trip to Bilbao, where our journey will be over at around 14:15 h.
