What to see in Guadix
- Guadix Cathedral: one of the most original cathedrals in Andalusia and the most recognisable monument in Guadix. This cathedral is home to La Piedad of Guadix Cathedral, an exact replica of Michelangelo's work.
- Roman Theatre: discovered by chance in 2008 and has since become a major attraction in Guadix.
- Plaza de la Constitución: easily reached by crossing a small street located in Plaza de la Catedral. Home to Guadix Town Hall and a great place to sit back and have a drink at one of its many bars. This very busy square is the perfect spot to observe the town's daily hustle and bustle.
- Visit the Alcazaba: from here, you can enjoy the best views over Guadix and Sierra Nevada, as it located in the upper part of the town. Undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Guadix.
- Barrio de las Cuevas: located in the upper part of the town is the neighbourhood of Las Cuevas, comprising approximately 2000 caves. Do you know what makes them particularly interesting? all of them are inhabited! These cave houses are particularly unique in that they remain cool in summer and warm in winter, making them highly sought after by locals. When they were first constructed, they served as a refuge for marginalised minorities; today, however, they are inhabited by people from all walks of life. If you are interested in seeing what they look like on the inside, visit the Interpretation Centre, a cave-museum where life in these peculiar houses is recreated.
- Palacio de los Marqueses de Villalegre: a Renaissance-style palace constructed on what were originally Arab buildings. It now hosts events, concerts and exhibitions, although it is most well known as the headquarters for the youth division of Guadix City Council.
- Church of Santiago: declared a National Monument and one of the most beautiful monuments in Guadix. The main façade is one of the most impressive elements of the entire Church, built on the site of a former mosque.
- Guadix train station: What does a train station need to be for a visit to come recommended? Impressive! The station is very well preserved, although with an old touch that makes it feel like a walk in past times. It is also located very close to the centre, meaning that when arriving in Guadix by train, you'll have everything within reach.
Guadix is famous for having served as the setting for Hollywood films, and in particular since 1965, when a sequence of the film "For a Few Dollars More" was filmed here, after which the city became popular amongst cinematographers. One of the most famous films that had the honour of filming a sequence in Guadix is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. If Harrison Ford went to Guadix, then you must visit the town too!
