One of the hidden jewels of Almeria and the perfect place to get away from it all. Kick back on its beaches, get lost in its whitewashed streets and enjoy its cuisine, its people and, of course, its climate.

Looking to sample the south for yourself? Come with us and discover what Mojácar has to offer!

Mojacar and the Indalo Man

Many cultures have settled in this area thanks to its privileged height, proximity to the sea and its climate. And if the inhabitants of Mojácar have had something in common, it is their connection to the Indalo symbol. If you go to visit Mojácar, you will surely be struck by this figure, the origins of which date back to a cave painting found in the Cave of Los Letreros, which depicts a man whose arms are stretched out, holding a rainbow.

Tradition has it that the Indalo wards off evil spirits and brings good luck, which is why you will find it on almost all house facades, in all kinds of souvenirs sold Mojácar's shops and even in the form of a sticker on many of the cars in the area. An original souvenir of what many people consider to be the most beautiful town in Almeria!

Mojácar town and Mojácar beach

The first thing you need to know about Mojácar is that there are two areas that go by the same name: the old town located on a hill, and the beach area, which is home to hotels and places to go out and enjoy Almeria's nightlife.

We will start by getting (metaphorically) lost on the narrow streets, squares and corners of the charming old town. As we were saying, Mojácar is nestled atop Sierra Cabrera, a privileged point offering stunning views. As well as these views, this small town's main charm can be seen in its whitewashed houses, plant pots with colourful flowers and its cobbled streets. Here are a few of the spots that you simply cannot miss:

  • Plaza Nueva and Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The former offers some of the best views of the entire valley, spectacular views of the area, leading down to the sea. Plaza del Ayuntamiento is also another corner that you cannot miss out on, as the square is home to a centenary tree that was brought from the Americas by an immigrant.
  • El Arrabal. Narrow streets that are intertwined, whitewashed houses covered with flowers and ornate balconies inhabit what was once the Jewish quarter of Mojácar. It is the town's main tourist attraction, meaning you cannot miss out on it.
  • Plaza del Parterre. Plaza del Parterre is one of Mojácar's best known symbols. Surrounded by columns, this space was formerly an Arab cemetery; today, it serves as a meeting place where you can have an aperitif and enjoy some well-earned downtime. The square is also home to one of the facades of the church of Santa Maria, a former fortress that is believed to have been constructed on an Arab mosque. Another place you simply cannot miss.
  • Mojácar beach. Some people refer to it as the Ibiza of the South: this area is full of beaches, property developments, hotel complexes, restaurants and entertainment venues. Overlooked by Mojacar old town, this long stretch of beaches is the perfect holiday destination, both for those looking to get away from it all, kick back and enjoy the sunshine and those who are looking for just the opposite.
