Just 6 kilometres from Portugal, along the scenic Guadiana River, Badajoz welcomes visitors with its rich history and vibrant border-town spirit. A hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Born from Arab heritage in 875, yet with echoes of earlier settlements, Badajoz flourished through the ages, shining brightly as one of the Taifa kingdoms after the fall of the Córdoba Caliphate in the 11th century. During the 12th-century Reconquista, Badajoz maintained its prominence, becoming a key stronghold thanks to its invaluable position near Portugal.
What to see in the historic centre
The historic centre of the city is an example of the richness of its history. The Arab legacy is notable throughout the city, such as its wall or the Alcazaba, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. Get lost in its narrow streets and enjoy its picturesque arcades.
Places such as the Plaza Alta, the Plaza de San José, the Cathedral, the Puerta de las Palmas or the City Hall, are waiting for you to discover them, so get your camera ready. A walk along the banks of the Guadiana River and the Puente de las Palmas, the oldest in the city, is a must.
- Alcazaba: The Alcazaba of Badajoz is the oldest and largest military building in the city. It is a perfect place to enjoy the views of the city, get lost in its nooks and crannies and enjoy its invaluable Muslim legacy. Especially thanks to its location, with the Guadiana River to the north and the Rivillas stream to the east, which was key in the city's defensive strategy and gives it spectacular views.
- Wall: It was built to extend the initial fortification of the Alcazaba and visiting it is a real step into the past in which, in addition, you can enjoy magnificent views. Don't miss them!
- Plaza Alta: This square is easily recognisable thanks to its arches, an architectural marvel that once sheltered the stalls of the multiple markets that were held here. In addition to its unique beauty, this square also stands out for the buildings that surround it. The Alcazaba, Old Town Hall, Espantaperros Tower or the Watchtower, and the Casas Coloradas are some of the most charming spots surrounding this square.
- Cathedral: The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is another of the icons to see in this city. This temple is not recognisable at first glance as a cathedral, as it looks more like a defensive tower or a civil building. These are worth a visit!
- Puerta de las Palmas: Next to the Guadiana we will find these gates, another of the symbols of Badajoz, which were once part of the walled complex of the city. Nowadays, this scene is among Badajoz's most celebrated views. This is not only a must-see spot but one that encourages anyone to take a few snaps.
