The historical legacy of Ciudad Real

If there is one thing you cannot miss when you go to Ciudad Real, it is a visit to the Cathedral of Santa María del Prado. This jewel presents a mixture of styles, between late Gothic and Renaissance, due to the fact that the works began in the fifteenth century and did not finish until 1514.

On the outside, the temple has three simple portals: to the north is the Umbrian Gate, to the south the Midday Gate, and the third and most fascinating is the Western-facing Gate of Forgiveness, which dates from the thirteenth century, with an archaic vegetal decoration.

The interior is a single but immense nave, whose dimensions are 34 meters high, 53 meters long and 18 meters wide. It is one of the largest single-nave cathedrals in Spain. You will be speechless!

In addition to the Cathedral, the Church of San Pedro is well worth a visit. From the 15th century, this Gothic temple has an 18th-century altarpiece made with tiles from Talavera de la Reina, a real wonder!

Another must-see is the Puerta de Toledo. It is the only remains of the Real Alcázar of Ciudad Real and dates back to the fourteenth century.

Green Ciudad Real

Ciudad Real has numerous parks and gardens to visit, ideal for relaxing or for the little ones, such as the Prado Gardens or the Alces Park.

Parque Gasset also stands out. It offers the possibility of following three different routes: the first is dedicated to its "singular trees," with 12 points of interest; the second runs through the "monuments and sculptures" of the park; and the third focuses on the "ornamental fountains". A different plan that you are bound to love.

Nature lovers are in luck. Ciudad Real and its surroundings also offer numerous nature routes for all levels. In this sense, Ciudad Real has several national and natural parks in its province. One of the most important that is worth visiting is Las Tablas de Daimiel, about 43 km from the city of Ciudad Real. This park is a unique wetland in Europe, where a multitude of birds live thanks to its natural conditions.
