Located 75 km from Santander, Reinosa is nestled in spectacular mountains and serves as a gateway between Castile and Cantabria. Want to discover what to see in this town close to the source of the great River Ebro? Read on!
Reinosa old town is one of the things you cannot miss on your visit. This small town is a reference point for baroque architecture in Cantabria, as it is home to important examples of this style, such as the church of San Sebastián and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, two of the town's key historical monuments.
What's more, Plaza del Ayuntamiento is also home to the town's oldest buildings: stately houses built using masonry in the 16th and 17th centuries. What's most popular? Its arcades, where you can taste the sweet puff pastry that is typical of the city: the "pantortilla". The perfect plan.
You cannot miss its four collegiate churches either, located in the surroundings, and especially San Pedro de Cervato (one of the churches), are full of magnetic allure. And don't forget to look for the figures under the eaves: they all have an erotic theme and are sure to make you smile.
The Teatro Principal (theatre), at the end of Calle Mayor, next to the Fuente La Aurora (fountain) stands out due to its turquoise façade and sides and its characteristic semicircular arches.
A few metres away is the Casa de la Niña de Oro, another emblematic building that currently houses the tourist office and an exhibition hall. Spend some time at this monument and get to know the history of this charming city.
Shall we continue on our way? Not far away is the neoclassical convent of San Francisco and its old cemetery, which now form part of Cantabria's cultural heritage. Then, oxygenate in the Parque de los Obeso (Park of the Obese), which runs alongside the Ebro River as it passes through Reinosa. The old Molino de San Esteban is still there, now repurposed as a public building.
The Parque de Cupido (Cupid Park) is one of the most popular areas amongst locals. Stop at one of the many bars and restaurants along the way. And don't leave without enjoying a good 'cocido montañés' (mountain stew)! After all, you're in Cantabria.
Reinosa offers you countless outdoor activities. How about a little hiking? Climb up to the top of the Tres Mares mountain peak through the stunning Valle de los Redondos valley and take a break at the viewpoint.
Another unmissable plan is to visit Saja-Besaya Natural Park, an enclave of incalculable ecological value surrounded by waterfalls, trails and endless forests.
Get a change of scenery and head to the reservoir, also known as the Ebro reservoir; this immense wetland is of major ornithological importance and is a great spot for windsurfing too, on account of the strong winds. If you decide to visit Reinosa in September, enjoy the best summer vibes that the town has to offer, and ring in the autumn in the perfect way.
Make a note because, at the end of that month, folk and peasant festivals are celebrated in honour of San Mateo: sports competitions, 'verbenas' (open-air evening events with music), concerts... What better way to enter the new season with renewed energy?
