San José and its beaches
San José is a town in Níjar, which is also the capital of Cabo de Gata Natural Park. This beautiful corner with low whitewashed buildings give it an irresistible summer atmosphere, and San José is in a more than privileged setting, surrounded by some of the best beaches in Almeria:
- Mónsul Beach: It is a beach of volcanic origin, very famous for having been the setting for films, advertisements, video clips... Its crystal clear waters and fine sand will surely make you fall in love. Careful! This beach can only be accessed by a forest track from San José, and in summer access is restricted.
- Cala de En medio: This cove is a hidden gem accessible only on foot or by boat, ensuring tranquility and untouched natural beauty. Its crystal-clear waters and golden sands make it the perfect place for nature and photography lovers.
- Cala del Plomo: another hidden gem in Cabo de Gata Natural Park, Cala del Plomo offers an unspoilt environment with crystal-clear waters, perfect for diving and snorkelling. Its surrounding cliffs make it especially picturesque.

But be careful, it is not recommended for children as the beach drops off very quickly and can be dangerous to bathe in if there are strong currents.
- Cala Rajá: Located in a remote area of Cabo de Gata, this cove offers a unique experience with its dark sand and transparent waters. It is perfect for those looking for a beach that is not very crowded and has a special charm.
- Cala de San Pedro: Accessible only on foot or by boat, this cove is known for its turquoise waters and stunning natural surroundings. It is ideal for snorkeling and for those looking for an escape from the crowds.
- Playa de Agua Amarga: with access for people with reduced mobility, this beach is located in the town of the same name. Unlike other beaches in the area, this features services including restaurants, hotels or kiosks, and it tends to be quite busy in July and August. Nevertheless, its sands and water make it the perfect place to spend your holidays.
- Playa de Carboneras: located in the village of Carboneras, this urban beach for spending the day with children. It is spacious, easy to access, has lifeguard services and tends not to be very crowded.
