We inform you that you can request the return of your deposit until April 30, 2024.

We also remind you that if you have not requested the refund of the deposit for your 2022 pass, you have until 31 December 2023 to claim it.

Please bear in mind that you must keep your digital or physical pass and the purchase ticket or receipt until your deposit for the pass has been refunded, since these are required to request the refund or to solve any incident that may occur throughout the process.

  • If you paid the deposit by credit card:

The deposit will be automatically returned between 9 and 20 May to the card with which you purchased the pass as long as you have made a minimum of 16 journeys and your pass is not included in the list of non-compliance with anti-fraud measures.

If you have not received the refund by 20 May, please visit a Customer Service point to fill in the Refund Form providing your details so that we can review your case.

  • If you paid the deposit in cash:

From 16 May onwards, you can request a refund by visiting any point of sale or Customer Service point. You must present your pass along with your DNI or NIF/NIE as well as any receipt or proof of purchase you have.

If the deposit cannot be refunded to you at the time due to an issue, you will be asked to fill in the Refund Form providing your details. Your request will be processed by our After-Sales staff and they will inform you whether you are entitled to a refund or not.

These conditions for the refund of your deposit do not apply to passes in ISO/magnetic stripe format purchased for Rodalies de Catalunya (Cercanías (Commuter) and Regional) and Metric Gauge services.

 

Purchase of passes valid from 1 January

You can purchase the Discounted Passes on 29 December, which will be valid from 1 January onwards and until the end of 2026.

The Government of Spain, at the proposal of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, has approved by Royal Decree-Law the new Renfe multi-trip tickets for Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia services.

Its aim is to promote the use of public transport and reduce the use of private vehicles, which will also help reduce our dependence on energy and our carbon footprint. On trains without prior reservation, you can board the train directly. On some Media Distancia trains it is necessary to book in advance. For the benefit of all of us who use the train, don't make reservations you don't need. If you do make a reservation and you're not going to use it, please cancel it so that other people can use that seat. Use it responsibly.

To avoid inappropriate use, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Environment has published a Resolution aimed at preventing the incorrect use of passes.

Cercanías Services

Applicable to the cores of: Bilbao, Cádiz, Madrid, Málaga, Murcia/Alicante, Rodalies Barcelona, San Sebastián, Seville, València, Zaragoza, Cartagena-Los Nietos, Ferrol and León.

From January and until the end of 2026, you can benefit from Renfe's new passes and travel to any station in the network.

In the case of the Asturias and Cantabria network, you can continue to benefit from free passes during the three quarters of the year (from January to April, from May to August and from September to December).

Here is how you can acquire the new Passes and how to use them. Purchase your pass at the usual points of purchase: Renfe Cercanías (Commuter) App (recommended), self-service machines and ticket offices at stations.

What are they and how can I benefit from them?

  • Single and return tickets will continue to be valid according to the areas of use as usual.
  • 10-trip pass (Bonotren): this pass can be purchased until 31 December. Remember that this pass can be used by several people and the price will depend on the areas of use as usual. It will be valid for travel for one year from the start of its validity period.
    • You can purchase it 30 days before the start of the validity period (the start date is selected at the time of purchase).
  • New monthly discount pass: this pass is personal. It costs €20 per month and can be used without limits for one month in all Cercanías (Commuter) networks with your personalised Tarjeta Renfe&Tú contactless card.
    • You can purchase it 30 days in advance before the first day you are going to start using it (at the time of purchase the start date is selected).
    • You will need to provide your DNI/NIE or passport and a valid phone number.
    • You can purchase it 30 days before the start of the validity period (the start date is selected at the time of purchase).
  • New subsidised Youth Monthly Pass: this pass is personal. It costs €10 per month and can be used without limits for one month in all Cercanías (Commuter) networks with your personalised Tarjeta Renfe&Tú contactless card.
    • Who can get it? All young people born between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2011.
    • To obtain it you will need a registration code provided by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. To this end, you must register at the following link. You will need the code at the time of purchase in order to purchase your Pass via Renfe's usual sales channels.
    • You can purchase it 30 days before the start of the validity period (the start date is selected at the time of purchase).
  • New Children's Pass: this pass is personal. It is free of charge and can be used without limits throughout the year until 31 December in all Cercanías (Commuter) networks with your personalised Tarjeta Renfe&Tú contactless card.
    • Who can purchase the pass? Minors born on or after 1 January 2012.
    • To obtain it you will need a registration code provided by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. To this end, you must register at the following link. You will need the code at the time of purchase in order to purchase your Pass via Renfe's usual sales channels.
    • Valid throughout 2026, meaning you can use it from 1 January to 31 December.

For monthly Passes, only one personalised pass can be purchased during the validity period for all Cercanías (Commuter) networks.

In the case of Rodalies de Catalunya, as there is no TSC Personalised card, the new tickets can be loaded onto the Renfe&Tú Rodalies contactless card.

When it is detected that a personalised pass has been used by a passenger other than the holder, the passenger will be considered as travelling without a ticket. The pass will be blocked without any entitlement to a refund for the unused period, and the holder will not be allowed to purchase another discount personalised pass for a period of 60 days.
 

 

 

Media Distancia (Mid-distance) Services

You can benefit from the new Media Distancia (Mid-distance) passes from 1 January to 31 December, allowing all frequent users of this service to travel between two specific departure and arrival stations.

Here is how you can acquire the new Passes and how to use them. Purchase your pass at the usual points of purchase: renfe.com, self-service machines and ticket offices at stations.
 

What are they and how can I benefit from them?

  • 10-trip pass: this pass can be purchased until 31 December and will be valid for travel for one year from the start date of the pass. Please bear in mind that this pass can be used by several people and the pass provides a 40% discount on the usual price of the Tarjeta 10 Sencilla card.
    • You can purchase it 30 days before the start of the validity period (the start date is selected at the time of purchase).
  • New monthly discount pass: this pass is personal. It provides a 40% discount on the usual price of the Tarjeta 40 Sencilla card.
    • You can purchase it 30 days in advance before the first day you are going to start using it (at the time of purchase the start date is selected).
    • The pass will be valid for one month from the selected start date.
    • You will need to provide your DNI/NIE or Passport and a valid phone number.
    • You can purchase it 30 days before the start of the validity period (the start date is selected at the time of purchase).
  • New subsidised Youth Monthly Pass: this pass is personal. It provides a 50% discount on the Discount Adult Monthly Pass.
    • Who can get it? All young people born between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2011
    • To obtain it you will need a registration code provided by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. To this end, you must register at the following link. You will need the code at the time of purchase in order to purchase your Pass via Renfe's usual sales channels.
    • You can purchase it 30 days in advance before the first day you are going to start using it (at the time of purchase the start date is selected).
    • The pass will be valid for one month from the selected start date.

  • New Children's Pass: this pass is personal. It is free and can be used without limits throughout the year until 31 December.

Measures to promote good use of passes

  • The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has established measures to promote the proper use of Media Distancia passes.
  • For monthly passes, only one personalised pass may be purchased per origin/destination during a single validity period.
  • The maximum number of active daily validations per pass will be four outward or return journeys. This limit does not apply to the 10-trip pass.
  • Two trips cannot be validated by the same traveller in the same direction until three times the scheduled travel time has elapsed (this limitation will affect all passes for the same traveller), with a minimum of 180 minutes. For example, if the travel time between two stations is one hour, and the ticket for a train departing at 8:00 has been validated, it can only be validated again on another train departing after 11:00 (one hour x 3).
  •  If during the period of validity of the pass, the passenger commits 3 infringements, it will be considered fraudulent use.
  • In order not to be considered an improper use, the validation that is not going to be used must be cancelled at least 60 minutes before the train's departure time.
  • It will also be considered an offence if you book a seat and do not travel, i.e. you do not occupy your seat.
  • If you have committed 3 offences, the pass will be cancelled, without you retaining any right to a refund; additionally, you will not be issued a new discount pass for any origin-destination until 60 days have elapsed since its cancellation.
  • Remember to always occupy the seat assigned to you by the sales system (on the ticket). Otherwise, inspection staff may rule that the pass has been used improperly.
  • Renfe Viajeros (Renfe Passengers) will send the passenger a notification using the contact details provided by the passenger each time an offence is committed, warning them of the possible consequences. When it is detected that a pass has been used by a passenger other than the holder, the passenger will be considered as travelling without a ticket. The pass will be blocked without any entitlement to a refund for the unused period and the holder will not be allowed to purchase another pass for a period of 60 days.
  • As a general rule, these anti-fraud measures do not apply to the 10-trip pass and travellers who have had their pass blocked for fraudulent use will be able to purchase this pass.
