• The company ranks among the top-performing companies in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Renfe is 36 points above the industry average, with a score of 78.7%
  • This index analyzes the railway sector's contribution to global sustainability

Renfe has been rated B+, the highest score awarded in the 2024 edition of the Railway Sustainability Index (RSI), published by the International Union of Railways (UIC). This places the company among the top-ranked businesses in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Renfe has improved its rating in this index for yet another year, achieving a score of 78.7. This means that the company is 36 points above the average for companies in the sector.

The Railway Sustainability Index (RSI) is based on an analysis of seven out of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These seven SDGs are considered due to their specific relevance to the railway sector, where the industry can make and demonstrate significant contributions. These Sustainable Development Goals are:

5. Gender Equality
6. Affordable and Clean Energy
7. Decent Work and Economic Growth
8. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
9. Sustainable Cities and Communities
10. Responsible Consumption and Production
11. Climate Action

This evaluation once again positions us among the top-ranked companies, with improvements in achieving all the SDGs. Additionally, in three of them, Renfe is very close to the highest score: “Affordable and Clean Energy,” “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” and “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.”

The Railway Sustainability Index (RSI) was launched in 2022 as a benchmarking tool designed by and for the railway community to provide a sectoral rating system in Corporate Sustainability.

Thus, Renfe continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability by continuously improving its non-financial indicators in environmental, social, and governance matters.

New Sustainability Master Plan

Renfe has implemented a new Sustainability Master Plan, which, with a global perspective and alignment with European standards, reinforces its commitment to public service. It positions Renfe as a leading operator in sustainable mobility, promoting social, economic, and environmental development for a greener and more equitable future, connecting people and territories inclusively and responsibly.

The new Sustainability Master Plan is structured into 211 specific actions, involving the entire Renfe Group in its implementation through three major pillars:

In the Environmental field, the Plan is structured around three key drivers aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and improving energy management; promoting sustainable, integrated, and resilient mobility; and ensuring responsible, circular, and environmentally respectful management.

In the Social field, the focus is on people, fostering an inclusive, safe, and healthy work environment that promotes diversity, employee well-being, and professional development, while also strengthening social well-being and societal protection. It reinforces its commitment to territorial integration, generating distinctive social value through its services.

Finally, in the Governance field, the Plan stands out for its ethical, transparent, and responsible management, reinforcing regulatory compliance, digital protection, and inclusive decision-making while accelerating technological innovation in line with industry standards.
