As part of its firm commitment to sustainability, Renfe Mercancías, the rail freight subsidiary of the Renfe Group, has presented the 2024 Carbon Footprint Certificate to several of its main logistics clients during the International Logistics Exhibition (SIL). This recognition highlights the environmental benefit of choosing rail freight over road transport, quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions avoided thanks to this choice.
In total, the companies awarded the Carbon Footprint Certificate avoided more than 240,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2024 by choosing to transport their goods by rail with Renfe Mercancías instead of by road. The certificates were awarded to twelve companies across various sectors, including steel, automotive, paper, agri-food, port logistics and intermodal transport.
Together, these companies transported over 5.6 million tonnes of goods by rail with Renfe Mercancías, with an average of 93.7% of shipments carried out using electric locomotives powered by renewable energy sources—resulting in zero direct or indirect emissions at origin.
Since 2022, Renfe Mercancías has held Carbon Neutral certification for its electric traction services, in accordance with the international PAS 2060 standard. This certification guarantees climate neutrality through the exclusive use of green electricity and the implementation of energy efficiency and consumption reduction measures.
The Carbon Footprint Certificate initiative reinforces the role of rail freight as a cornerstone of a sustainable logistics chain, alongside other essential values such as safety, reliability, quality and operational efficiency.
