Managing large flows of people is one of the challenges facing urban transport hubs in any large city. Thanks to the funds and aid offered as part of the Next Generation Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, Renfe Viajeros is facing up to this problem by implementing smart boarding controls at Cercanías stations. The project has been allocated 13.2 million euros.

The new control systems will make it possible to transit through stations, minimise boarding times and obtaining tickets, and also detect overcrowding above the accepted standards, meaning that decisions can be made in real time, redirecting passenger flows, even changing plans in relation to how often trains run.

In the context of digitalisation, Renfe awarded the contract for the supply, installation and maintenance of multimedia screens, worth 19.2 million euros, also financed using Next Generation funds. The aim is to replace information offered in paper format at stations with screens, meaning it is always relevant and can be customised for each station.

Along the same lines, the Renfe Smart Security Station (RS3), which has a budget of 31.7 million euros from Next Generation funds, for the implementation of artificial intelligence systems for surveillance teams at around 500 stations.

This project began at the start of last year and is due to end in 2024. During this period, more than 5,000 analogue security cameras will be replaced by IP cameras, making it possible to share the information gathered via the CCTV system as part of an integrated video analytics system
