Travel with your dog of up to 40 kg without a carrier

Now you can travel with your dog weighing up to 40 kg without a carrier on our AVE, Avlo, Larga Distancia, Avant and Media Distancia trains.

To make the trip, it is essential to comply with the established requirements and carry the up-to-date vaccination record (signed and stamped by veterinary personnel) or European pet passport. Download the recommendations and obligations for your trip.

Conditions of carriage:

• You can travel with your dog weighing up to 40 kg without a carrier (except for dogs of potentially dangerous breeds, dogs under 1 year old, and females in heat).
• Available on all our AVE, Avlo, Larga Distancia, Avant and Media Distancia trains (except trains with connections and trains with alternative transport arrangements). When purchasing your ticket, if your train offers the option for dogs up to 40 kg to travel without a carrier, it will be marked with a small symbol (paw print).
• Maximum of 1 large dog per person.
• A maximum of 2 large dogs per train, in a single designated carriage. When you buy your ticket for AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia trains, you will be able to see which carriages are pet friendly.
• The dog will travel in the seat next to you, occupying the inner window seat, without a carrier. The dog must wear a muzzle and a non-extendable lead (max. 1.5 m) at the station and when boarding/disembarking the train. During the journey, the dog does not need to wear a muzzle, but it must be kept on a lead and remain in its seat beside the window until reaching the final destination.
• In the case of Avant (mid-distance high-speed) and Media Distancia (mid-distance) trains, the dog is not permitted to travel on the seat.
  
• To allow your dog to travel, you must purchase the Dogs up to 40 kg add-on:
   
  • On AVE, Avlo, and Larga Distancia trains, you must purchase the supplement for dogs up to 40 kg for €40. Please note that on AVE and Larga Distancia (long-distance high-speed) trains, this service is exclusive to Elige Estándar tickets.
    
  • On Avlo trains, you need to purchase the add-on for dogs up to 40 kg for €40, in addition to your Básico ticket.
  • On Avant and Media Distancia trains, the supplement costs the same as a general fare ticket, in addition to your single or return ticket.
     
• You can purchase it on the website (www.renfe.com), the Renfe app, and at physical and virtual agencies, up to 24 hours before the train's departure.
• Seat selection is unavailable, as the spaces for dogs weighing up to 40 kg are pre-determined.
• No changes allowed.
• Cancellation is allowed (depending on the conditions of the ticket purchased).
• At the boarding control or on board, on AVE, Avlo, Euromed, Intercity and Avant trains, we will give you a travel kit, consisting of a seat cover and a mat that you must place on the floor of the seat next to the window and remove once your journey is complete. The travel kit is not included on Media Distancia (Mid-distance) trains. 
• On all our trains you must bring your own cleaning kit: absorbent pad, wipes, poo bags, disinfectant spray and odour-repellent spray. In all cases, you must take responsibility for any incident that may occur or any cleaning that may be necessary.
• Don't forget to bring your vaccination booklet (properly stamped and signed by veterinary staff) or your up-to-date European pet passport, as you will need to present it together with your ticket to board the train at the station.

Renfe and Nestlé Purina recommend that, to ensure your pet's well-being during the trip, you bring your own blanket and silent toy and avoid feeding them during the three hours prior to the trip to prevent sickness.
