Avignon is a French city and commune on the banks of the Rhône river the Provence – Alps – Côte d'Azur region. 

The city is known in France for its Avignon Theatre Festival. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar and held in July every year, it is considered the oldest and most famous theatre festival in France. The city is filled with shows every year and these spaces even reach the outskirts of Avignon.

What to see in Avignon?

We recommend the following must-see places:

  • Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes). This Gothic-style fortress palace was built in the fourteenth century (1334 and 1363) and was the home to seven popes during the Avignon Papacy. It is also the home of one of the largest Gothic buildings, made up of two palaces: Palais Vieux Palais Neuf (New and Old Palaces). You can visit every corner, from the private alcoves of the popes to the cloisters and chapels.  
  • Notre Dame des Doms d'Avignon (Avignon Cathedral). Provençal Romanesque cathedral of the twelfth century, characterised by a golden statue of the Virgin, crowning the bell tower. 
  • Saint-Bénezet bridge. Also known as Avignon Bridge. A four-arched bridge of the twelfth century that crosses the Rhône. It is currently in the middle of the river, but it was used as a place to cross to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. 
  • Jardin des Doms. English-style garden found on Rocher des Doms hill. The perfect natural retreat to enjoy during the summer and admire the landscape, Rhône river and its surroundings.
