Discovering Fourvière, the most magical hill in Lyon

Visiting Fourvière hill means returning to the origins of this beautiful French city. The history of Lyon begins here, where the Romans founded it more than 2,000 years ago, under the name "Lugdunum". You cannot miss Fourvière hill if you visit Lyon, the walk up there is worthwhile.

What to see on Fourvière hill

There are two ways to reach the hilltop. Either on foot, which takes a little more time and, above all, effort. Or by taking the metro to Vieux Lyon station and then continuing on the cable car. Once on the hilltop, it's time to start discovering its treasures.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is the first thing that catches your eye. This temple was built in the last third of the nineteenth century in tribute of the Virgin Mary. Not surprisingly, it is a statue of the Virgin, which crowns the basilica. The outside may seem somewhat sober, but not its interior, in Byzantine style.

Clearly, the next stop is the metal tower, erected making a gesture to Eiffel Tower. Not surprisingly, there is a rumour that attributes its design to Gustave Eiffel, although the truth is that it was actually designed by architect Eugène Collonge. This tower was built in 1894, when the Universal Exhibition of Lyon was held. Currently, this building is used as the radio and television aerial. Thanks to the hill, it rises a few metres higher than the Eiffel Tower, which fills Lyon's inhabitants with pride.

You are only a few steps away from Lyon's origins, up to the Roman ruins. The archaeological site can be found in the southern part of Fourviére hill, with some spots of interest, such as the Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilisation, the Roman theatre or the Odeon. You must visit this place to understand the city's history.

On the hilltop, you will also find great gardens to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city. These are the Rosaire gardens, a peaceful environment found inside the Parc des Hauteurs, where you can walk between the paths surrounded by colourful and aromatic roses.

Finally, Fourvière hill is one of the best places in Lyon to admire the city's splendour. There are spectacular views from the hilltop, which can be admired at any time of the day.
