Among mountains and green forests on the banks of the Douro River, you will find a place of dreams: Soria. This is the place that captivated poets such as Machado, Gerardo Diego and Bécquer with its magnetism. It is the strategic enclave that the Romans once craved, and for which the Numantians gave their lives. Strolling through the city will take you to its mediaeval past, enveloped in nature and serenity.

Keen to discover what this beautiful city has to offer? Read on to discover what to see in Soria!

Soria: history and heritage

The section of the Douro that bathes the city has monumental heritage of extraordinary beauty, such as the Ermita barroca de San Saturio (baroque shrine), the foundations of which are the rocks that were eroded in their day by the river, forming a cave through which you can go in and discover impressive frescoes inside.

The spiritual aura along this riverbank continues in the intertwined arches of the Romanesque Monasterio de San Juan (monastery). The Puente de Piedra (Stone Bridge) will take you to other Romanesque jewels across the river, such as the Concatedral de San Pedro (co-cathedral) or the church of Santo Domingo.

The best views of Soria are to be seen in its hills. From both, you will see remains of the wall and the castle from the Middle Ages. In addition, at the Cuatro Vientos viewpoint, there is a monument to Machado and his wife Leonor, who used to walk in the surroundings of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Mirón. From the Cerro del Castillo (hill), you will find one of the parks that—along with the Alameda de Cervantes or, as the people of Soria know it, La Dehesa—has a special charm at any time of year.

In the city centre, in addition to being amazed by Romanesque churches and Renaissance palaces, you can take a photo of yourself having a coffee next to the poet Gerardo Diego, although you shouldn't miss the Casa de los Poetas to really get to know his work and that of his friend Machado, while also remembering Bécquer.

The Plaza Mayor will also take you back to mediaeval Soria. It is the perfect place to delight your taste buds with juicy and simultaneously crispy 'torreznos' (a kind of bacon crackling), which are as much a symbol of this city as the figure of the horse. The latter you will find in the Museo Numantino, a historical and archaeological testimony to civilisations that, like you, succumbed to the magic of the river.

Soria experiences culture through music and theatre festivals in its streets, squares and parks and, of course, on the banks of the Douro. From the Soria Rock festival to the Enclave de Agua, where Afro-American music merges with the idyllic green landscape of the riverside.

Looking beyond Soria: discover the province

The province of Soria is home to some of the most spectacular natural corners of Castile and Leon as well as little villages that will immediately take you back in time. Ready to hear more about them?

  • La Laguna Negra: this ancient glacier is located in the Picos de Urbión. The lagoon is one of the province's most beautiful spots thanks to its privileged environment, surrounded by immense pine forests that give this setting its dark appearance.
  • Cañón de Río Lobos: this limestone canyon was formed by the erosion caused by the River Lobos and is immense in depth. It was declared a Natural Park to ensure its wildlife and plant life received protection.
  • Calatañazor: this small village retains all its mediaeval charm thanks to its half-timbered houses. It is well worth the visit!
